SEN teaching assistant
In Year 5, Mr. Pascoe is the class teacher, supported by Ms Scaife, Mrs Ham and Miss Pedley. Children in Year 5 are expected to become more independent as the year progresses to prepare them for Year 6 and SATs. We expect all children to try their best and have a growth mindset.
In Year 5, outdoor learning takes place on Tuesday afternoons and PE is on Thursday afternoons. Please ensure full PE kits are in school every week. Homework is issued on Fridays and is due in on Wednesdays. Homework club is available every Monday and Tuesday lunchtime should your child need assistance with completing this.
Reading should be enjoyed daily – every child is expected to read their target number of pages, either independently or to an adult. They should then write how much they have read in their home-school-link book, which should be initialled daily by an adult at home. Pupils are also expected to learn their spellings and times tables each week.

In maths this term, we will be revising our understanding of place value. We will also be revising and building on our understanding of fractions, using the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Graphs and statistics will also be covered.
In English, we will be reading and discussing a poem a day. Furthermore, we will be sharing a class text from famous authors such as Ted Hughes and Roald Dahl. This will be in addition to the texts we share in English lessons.
Our science learning for this term will include a focus on our planet and the solar system. A workshop about the solar system will take place at NEXUS to complement this learning.
Outdoor learning and science activities will take place on a rota basis on Tuesday afternoons. These will be taught by Mr Costello and Miss Pedley. Where possible, these activities will take place outside, in our Cultivating Futures area.
Throughout our RE sessions, we will study Sikhism and Christianity. We have invited Daya for a special RE day to enrich the curriculum and share her knowledge with the children.
The children will receive regular French lessons later in the term with Monsieur Wilkinson, a languages teacher from CSIA.
PE will continue to take place on Thursday afternoons and will be taught by Mr Kay. The focus for this term will be swimming and basketball. Please ensure your child’s PE kit is in school every week to ensure they can participate fully in this important part of their education.
In computing this term, as well as revising our understanding of internet safety, we will be researching space using ipads to produce a fact file about a chosen planet. We shall then type, edit and share our work using Google Classroom.
As part of our learning in geography, we shall seek to understand geographical similarities and differences through the study of human and physical geography of a region of the United Kingdom, a region in a European country, and a region America.
In history, we will learn about the Ancient Greeks. The children will learn aboutGreek life and achievements and their influence on the western world.
In music, we will be learning how to create space themed music with electronic instruments and sounds. We will also be learning how to sing our class’s song for our annual music event, using appropriate pitch and tone.
In art, we shall study the work of Vincent van Gogh and produce our own version of “Starry Night” using a variety of media.

In English we have been learning a lot about space currently we are writing a story in pairs about a alien who is told to stick to the path or something could get him this story if you could not guess is based on little red riding hood. We have also been learning our amazing music night song called Joseph and his amazing technicolor dreamcoat we have been working very hard and I think we have definitely nailed it!
In Maths, we have been learning a lot of rounding and estimating to the nearest 10 and 100’s. I find it very educational. We have also been learning how to add in column method we have been adding up to millions it is definitely very challenging for me!
Our topic is called to the stars and we have been learning all about space we even went to Nexus but that was a while ago at Nexus we learnt a poem to remember the planets it was very useful and helps us all in our comprehension.
In English we have been learning to adapt a fairy tale and turn it into a space adventure. I really liked using the chromebooks to edit my work and to write the beginning of a space story.
In Maths, we have been learning to use the formal method for addition and subtraction using whole numbers and we use the bar model for adding and subtraction.
We have been busy preparing for music night. “Any dream will do.” Also, we have doing mathletics so we were busy this week.

In English, we have been learning about comprehension about the moon and about the first astronauts on the moon and other interesting space facts.
In Maths, we have been learning how to read ‘Roman Numerals’. Today we were using mental strategies to solve addition and subtraction.

In maths, we have been learning about rounding to the nearest 10’s and 100’s and have also been learning place value.
Our topic is called “To the Stars” and we have been learning to design the Starry Night painting in different ways. We also have done some comprehension about an astronaut.
