Video Game Addiction


Don’t let a video game addiction affect your child’s well-being – know the signs of addiction!
  1. Mood Shifts
    Your child may go from feeling cranky to feeling calm and relaxed when playing video games. Can they 'switch off' from the game they were playing and carry on with normal routines? Or do they get angry? 
  2. Withdrawal Symptoms
    When grounded from playing video games or unable to play, a child will experience feelings of anger and frustration, much like any other from of addiction.
  3. Preoccupation with Video Games
    Children who eat, drink, sleep and talk about video games when not engaged in the activity have become preoccupied or obsessed with it. Do they have the device in their room? Play on it before bed time?
  1. Poor Personal Hygiene
    Do they 'forget' to brush their teeth in favour of playing their computer?
  2. Physical Problems
    Hours and hours of playing video games will affect the body! Eyestrain will produce dry or red eyes. Soreness in the fingers, back or neck is also common. Complaints of headaches may also start to occur on a frequent basis.
  1. Declining Interest in School Performance
    School performance can (will likely) be affected - a lack of sleep is a major problem!
  2. Loss of Interest in Other Activities
    Children will be to 'busy' to do many tasks. Would they rather stay in on the computer than playing outside?
  3. Increased Aggression
    If you limit computer time, if you ask them to stop are you met with signs of aggression?

 Relationship Signs of Video Game Addiction

  1. Isolation
    A massive problem! Does your child spend less and less time with the family? Do they mess around just so that you tell them that they can go to their room and play on the computer?
  2. Conflicts with Others
    Relationships with family and friends can become strained - arguments over stopping their computer usage is becoming more and more common.
